Another day, another SC coupe project I'm working on. Planning on keeping this one.

So this one is a 188BHP model that I've now owned for 5 months or so. I viewed/inspected the car and found the following;

The Good...

  • Very long ownership by the PO and 4 just owners from new
  • Bodywork sound, well the bits I could get to (more on this later)
  • Quite original
  • Well documented
  • Non-sport model although the ATS wheels were switched to Fuchs
  • Great 915, yes really
  • High miles so no mileage anxiety going forward
  • Photographic records of all work done
  • Friendly seller

The Bad...

  • Rusty rear silencer
  • Vacuum leaks
  • Scruffy engine bay
  • Tired ignition system
  • Tired suspension

The Ugly...

  • Underbody coating removed and replaced with some product that's not as good
  • Yellow painted calipers
  • Red painted fan pulley (if you like that, sorry)
  • Later front wings with side repeaters
  • 3.2 front valance/fogs (again sorry if you like that on an SC)

First up was to clean up the engine bay a little so I could actually look at it. New fan pulley, hoses, HT leads, engine mounts, paint stripper and we have this;

IMG_3352.JPEG.fab3983eb1d81c0bca45d4725c59474e.JPEG

The mounts were quite bad lol

IMG_3345.thumb.JPG.21909c3b252a753fe91a656e42fd4bc8.JPG

Not keen on rear wipers so that went too which meant changing the grille to one without the cut out.

More cosmetic stuff.

Changing the front valance. Had a good used item in the spares stash so applied the stone guard to that and painted it.

IMG_3320.thumb.JPG.bd367d59f569d603f6f3d29fa4960ac4.JPG

Cleaned these up too...

IMG_3356.thumb.JPG.25f97305a60d5e0b60c8fe7c86030b5c.JPG

Much better, to my eyes anyway

Thanks for the comments. On to the brakes...

Blasted and painted the rear backing plates (fronts were quite new) and had the rear calipers refurbed by CCA who always do great work. Matt supplied the rest.

IMG_3438.thumb.JPG.742f3a16601d6e6881b5d1f2156719fc.JPG

Put that lot together

IMG_3441.thumb.JPG.b33bcf61375d77bf164ef5b6a45b2d6d.JPGIMG_3442.thumb.JPG.6958824b4929ac4e86685180d90d1393.JPGIMG_3443.thumb.JPG.e412cc441bff1a30a923a42e16315404.JPG

Stripped the awful yellow paint from the fronts for now but these will get sent off for proper refurb at some point as the off side is grabbing slightly anyway.

Then changed the rusty rear silencer for a Dansk stainless 2 in / 1 out. Also swapped out the spent Koni front inserts and replaced with Billies

Engine bay looking much better now although lots more to do on that. Really like these SC engine bays in stock form.

comp.thumb.jpg.95f46d73715d9edc638cae062ead46e6.jpg

Changed the drop links and gearbox mounts and made good the ARB and gearbox bracket. Used harder compound gearbox mounts which I prefer.

IMG_3370.thumb.JPG.6b556d439023ca5219c07e3d261d9e1c.JPG

Removed the heat exchangers which turned out to be genuine SSI units although soaked in engine oil

IMG_3501.thumb.JPG.d649cb6974dba73a09cfd78e368e6b3e.JPG

Then installed some of these...

And also some of these...

Next up was dropping the engine/box to attend to the following;

  • New clutch/Flywheel
  • Inspect known oil leak areas (Oil thermostat/Pressure switch/ Breather/ Rear Main Seal)
  • Tin ware

IMG_3567.thumb.JPG.171cd10753490cd11ee23ecc1100cc1a.JPG

IMG_3566.thumb.JPG.527500d71d80745705ed624f6170fa0a.JPG

Thermostat and oil switch were leaking badly but rear main seal not too bad. Changed it anyway.

New seal in place

Good to see you back doing another project Andrew,  it’s going to look great as you’ve started with the best colour IB, 😀

Thanks Steve, hope you're keeping well.

Such a nice example, good to see you're removing all the 'bling'. Would look great back on the ATS wheels too!

Thanks. Agreed, I'm on the look out for a set of ATS but not many 6 & 7 sets available these days.

First surprise (tbh I kind of expected it) was corrosion related! Both rear shock towers were corroded badly. Couldn't see it when I viewed the car due to the remnants of the factory coatings / limited access and road grime. The top 'towers' were ok but below where the shocks travel through were in a poor state on both sides. Also, the curved channel that holds the engine seal in place was rotted too.

shock.thumb.jpg.d4b7b5cd71109df17539c3ffb5934c50.jpg

So I set about it with the dremel cutting wheel/angle grinder to get back to this...

curve.thumb.jpg.c1c889f2c4d819c4d477583c1839fdcf.jpg

Chased around a few breakers to try and get some replacement sections but it seems that nobody wants to cut up crash damaged shells anymore. So after lots of cutting, shaping and upside down MIG welding I managed to get them back somewhere close to their former glory.

New sound pad in place too. Looking much better I think

nice post!

have a look above your oil tank while the system is drained. I would pull it or at least have a good dig at the metal above it. Almost always needs work, while the rest is looking lovely

Nice work allround Andrew, good to see the engine out so you can get to all those jobs properly, makes life easier in the end too. I can see this will become a very nice sorted car, fingers crossed there won't be too many body issues.

Yes there was a little welding to do there but all taken care of.

Cheers

Thanks. All the typical areas (inner/outer sills/kidney bowls/front inner wings) were done 7 years ago and still solid so that saves me some work.

With the engine bay area welding complete, I replaced both rear shocks before moving on to the engine.

 IMG_3659.thumb.JPG.d5199657e999e910a787ba9e7f44b576.JPG

The bushings in the throttle linkage were well past their best so stripped that and replaced with new.

crank.thumb.JPG.490418038c462f1623950d270b8a953a.JPG

Then inspected the whole CIS and intake system to see where the vacuum leaks were coming from... there were some fairly obvious areas now I had full viewing access

Having found this I removed the whole CIS system

Not only is this a great thread showing excellent work, but my engine and box are current being rebuilt and I have just got to the stage of cleaning up the engine bay. My channel for the engine bay seal is also rusty. Now I have to check the bottom of the shock towers too.

As my CIS is sitting on the bench, had better check that too!

Having just done this on my 1980 SC I would recommend an ultra sonic cleaner for all the parts you can take off
