Was hoping someone on here uses a 2 post lift to do a engine drop

I intend to take out my engine by taking the weight of the engine with a bike lift and then lifting the car off the engine on a 2 post lift, can anyone tell me if I have to worry about the car tilting on the lift as the weight of the engine is removed

Thanks

Tim

No need to worry on this one, it’s quite straightforward. Just make sure you have a check list of things to undo/disconnect/remove and stick to it.  It’s also much easier if someone is helping with the removal lift as one of you can keep a close on things as the body lifts away from the engine.

Thanks for the quick reply, I've got my Dempsey 101 projects as a reference and have spent all week watching engine drops on YouTube

That is more-or-less how I do it, except I have a heavy duty trolley to place the engine on and raise the car. I used to use a Sealey (?) bike lift and while it did the job on a 915 car the balance point was just OK, with a heavier G50 unit the balance point tended to tip the lift a bit, still do-able though.

With a bit of practice, a helping hand and the right tools ready to go, it can easily be done in 1 hr out, 2 in.

I use a tool chest to drop the engine on, it has a piece of 25mm ply boxed over the top, makes engine drops a piece of pi$$

The 2 post lift has 4 feet right?

I've bought a bike lift as I wasn't sure the control of the 2 post lift would be good enough to drop onto a trolley, so wanted to be able to Jack up

guys do not overthink it;-) i use only 2 jack stands and floor jack...for many many years....the engine will balance nicely if you put right in the center..

Yep, same technique and not much more effort than dropping a Beetle engine.  A second trolley jack is handy if your axle stands don't quite lift the car high enough for the engine to slide out.

Ivan is of course right, the minimum is 2 big axle stands and a floor jack. Indeed I've seen Russel Lewis (No.1 Porsche engine man IMHO) do it exactly like that BUT if you already have a 2 post lift it is way easier! Tim, I found control of lift no problem, I can move mine almost mm at a time. Just undo almost everything, drop it onto the trolley, undo the engine and gearbox mounts and lift the car off....

Good luck whichever method you use. Chris.

Trolley jack, axle stands and a small trolley, like this Toolstation example, which keeps the engine/box stable and allows you to manoeuvre it easily when down.

It's a shame we didn't get a picture of it dangling from one prong of the bobcat's bucket....guess you were too busy maneuvering (and I was too busy praying!)

This is another option if you have big enough axle stands, which our local farmer did!

How did you get the car that high?

Normal car jacks and blocks of wood to raise the height of the jacks as the height of the car grew higher.  Not difficult, just a bit fiddly.  I also like to have the car level as it’s easier to remove and replace the engine with it level than at an angle.  Other opinions are of course available.
