I saw this on Pelican and thought it was interesting.  I didn’t realise this could be an option which also does away with concerns over aged tyres on the original wheels.  Does anyone have a Boxster that could try this and determine if it works with UK spare wheels? Felix…..

Ah ok, well somehow I’ve missed the discussion.  Can you give me an executive summary Gary

Well, safer than the 40 year-old factory space saver, cheaper than a rare, narrow 6 x 15 Fuchs and I still haven't got round to buying one

I'm surprised you don't remember the discussion Ian, was only 16 years ago !

Thanks Gary, I didn’t recall those for some reason.  Which option did you go with in the end?

Inaction 🤦‍♂️

Well I wasn't on the forum 16 years ago so I have an excuse for missing this. I've just looked and a boxster spare wheel can be had for £50. A 30 year old space saver is safer than a 50 year old collapsible I guess.

Just looking too, a couple of local Boxster being broken for spares on FB marketplace so messages sent.  Lets see who can find the cheapest!

No spare on my 981 - just a bottle of goop and a mini compressor.

In the 911 I carry a “modern” mini compressor and a puncture repair kit as Plan A and the space saver spare as Plan B. 🤞

£40 locally, worth a punt at that.  Popping over later to give it try.

Was only in the next village along and the guy was fine for me to try.

Didn't take any photos, but...

Tried it, doesn't fit very well at all in the spare wheel space.  Sticks up about 3" above the tank in the centre.  Fine if you're not too fussy about a great big lump in the middle.

If you're running the smaller 62l tank you might be fine, but I don't think any IBs are fitted with that.

So save your money and think of a better option.

Great work Nige, thanks for clarifying the art of the possible.  So Boxster/996 spares ruled out.  Just have to stick with my 964 version then unless anyone else can think of other spares with similar enough offsets?

Silly question, is there not a normal tyre we could replace the exiting spacer saver tyre with - Not sure what their size is or whether the wheel will allow one .

I have the 964 version in my 3.2,  it's in much better condition than my old original one was,  and much lighter if I remember.

But then it would save nothing in diameter, only perhaps a small savings in width. Which would take even more room than what Nige tried. Or have I missed your point?

I'm thinking more about safety/usability/reliability, etc. than space

Does yours require a spacer for the 964 wheel to fit correctly Steve?

I guess at that price it might still be worth using, especially when boot space is not a priority/issue.  Especially if the space lost is just in the area of the wheel centre.

Was nowhere near being able to lock it down, so a bungee strap or something would be needed.  Far from ideal.

In the shed I have a very small 15 inch diameter emergency spare from a VW Polo and even that is too bigger a diameter to fit.

And remember, if you use a spare you have to find space for the wheel you take off.

Compressor and goop for me.

No,  and it fits over my 968 front brake calipers as well.

Nice find Ian, that looks like a plan, get the Merc collapsible tyre and have it fitted to the Porsche spare wheel

Ian, don't you have Boxster callipers installed?  Just wondering if there would be clearance issues with a 15" spare.  Worth checking to see if the Merc PCD matches, then you could just use the whole thing instead of swapping the tyres over.

You'd still have the heavy steel.
