Hi, I recently replaced my original starter on my 1987 Targa, everything was working fine until the other day when after a short run it wouldn’t start again. I thought it was the replacement starter, I have removed it, tested on with cables onto the battery and works every time. I have just refit it and again no start. I have just checked the voltage on the yellow wire to the solenoid and I’m only getting 5.5v.

Has anybody had similar issues

Ignition switch? Put 12volts straight from the battery onto the yellow wire

Hi, thanks for your reply, I have done that, I ran a cable from the negative terminal on the battery to the body of the starter to eliminate a bad earth and I ran a wire from the positive terminal to the yellow wire on the starter and it starts every time, funnily enough I’m sat in it now looking at how to access the ignition switch as I thought the same.

The yellow wire goes through the 14 pin connector on the relay board in the engine compartment - might be worth checking to see if the plug is secure and the terminals aren't corroded. That said I had the same as you and replaced the switch. I found the easiest way was to remove the driver's seat and then lay on the floor with my head in the footwell. Access is a bit tight.

You may be able to unscrew the bezel that goes around the ignition lock cylinder to reveal the two security bolts that hold the steering lock in place. I found that mine were barely more than finger tight and after grinding a slight slot into the heads with a Dremel they were easily removed.

I eliminated the 14 pin connector, I unplugged it checked it and all seemed fine, I only had 5v coming in and going out of it, I have finally got the ignition switch out, like you I removed the bezel, I drilled through the top of the snap off bolts, Im going to order a new switch now, if for no other reason than to eliminate it, hopefully that cures it.

Thanks.
