Starting....the dreaded click

Recommended Posts

I have an occasional problem when starting the car, sometimes I get the dreaded click, sometimes it's fine. When it does fail, I stick the car in gear and rock it backwards and forwards a few times. This generally does the trick and it starts up as normal. But there is obviously a problem, and the rocking exercise makes me think it's the starter motor. What's it like doing a replacement with just trolley jack and axle stands ? Looking at one of the recent queries which related to a G50 gearbox and the fact it was suggested that the engine/gearbox be lowered slightly, mine is a 915, so can I get away without doing that?

Yes, removing / refitting the starter is not too tricky with the 915.

Might be worth buzzing out all the sections of yellow 50 solenoid wire from the ignition switch to the starter as well, it passes through a few connectors and can suffer poor termination / breaks. Then check volts at the starter, possibly leaving leads in situ for a while as it’s intermittent.

Test any immobiliser as well.
