Depends when the build date was, which can be considerably different to the actual registered date.

Yes, she was first registered in the UK on 19 November 1984. Believe I'm right in saying that all cars built after the summer break in Stuttgart were the next model year ie MY1985 in my case. Once the 40 year milestone is passed Ivan, they don't need taxing from the following April in the UK, or need an MOT (Control Technique).

Hi Bob,

I was also under the impression that once my car became 40 years old, [October 2024] then it would automatically be MOT exempt, however; due to its first registration on the log book being 1st of January 1985, I was told by the DVLA that my car would only be MOT exempt at December 2025! This is because the build date is not registered with them, only the registration date, and therefore they will automatically push the exemption back to the end of the year it was first registered! [I know its confusing]

Anyway, long story short, after being passed from one department to another in the DVLA, and speaking with multiple people there, it was decided that in order for my cars build date to be recognised by them, I would need to send in my log book, proof of the build year which thankfully I have from Matthew at type 911, and an accompanying letter explaining all of this.

Lets see what I get back!

Hopefully I'll miss all that palaver Ant due to being registered before year end. I guess with it being UK registered in November it was probably one of the first off the line for MY1985 at the end of summer '84.

Hi Bob,

That's good news!

Its certainly been a learning curve for me, I will update here when I have some news on my situation, it may help others in the future.

Mine was built July 85 but registered with the new C plate in August, which ran to July 86, I was worried that it might only get Classic status from August 26 then, but Ant’s post suggests December 25 as the end of the build year.

The classic status runs from April in the following year ie for you April 86. That's what I'm led to believe anyway, happy to be corrected.

From what I understand from the last conversation I had with them [DVLA] if the first registered date on the log book is anywhere between January and the middle of the year, then they will automatically assume the date for the vehicle to be Eligible for Classic status, and therefore MOT exempt as the end of the first registration year, which in my case would have been December 2025.

So I think your correct in assuming according to your car's build date, that your car actually becomes Eligible for classic status at the End of 2025, but please do check on this, and if so, you will have to do the same as I did and to get them to accept the actual build date instead of the first registration date, hope this helps.

See https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles  for a brief explanation.

I’ve heard that before Bob somewhere, although it may be from a post on this forum, which we’ve both read. Stupid sticking to the Roman calendar, like my tax years, because bureaucracy has always done it that way.

The Froggies just do it differently....you have a one off tax on their version of a V5 (Carte Grise).....except I found out its not a one off as if you move to a different area you pay again, or if you're a new keeper. Combine that with autoroute tolls - I quite often shell out 100 euros plus a month on those. At least they generally maintain their roads compared to Blighty!

Well, after sending in the build sheet kindly provided by Matthew along with my V5C and an accompanying letter, I received my V5C back yesterday along with a letter from the DVLA stating that the info provided is not sufficient, and therefore it is not acceptable as proof for an amendment to be made to their records on my vehicle!

Spoke with a real decent chap Rod at Bournemouth Porsche, who informed me that Porsche used to allow them to access all of the info Porsche holds on almost any Porsche vehicle produced, However; they now only allow dealers in the UK to access very minimal info eg; invoice dates and options etc, but no build date, even contacted Porsche club UK, spoke to a real nice lady there who also informed me that they too cannot access this info anymore.

At the moment I am out of ideas, apparently from the letter I received from the DVLA, it states that they will accept info from The glass's check book, what ever that means, anyway, if anyone has any input they think may be of use in overcoming this issue, it would be much appreciated.

I believe Bob is correct, my ‘82 is registered as classic but my ‘84 first registered in September 84 will become tax exempt in April 2025 ie. April 1st year AFTER car turns 40 from 1st registration date. I also believe it becomes MOT exempt at the same time but my current MOT runs out in September ‘25 so no issue for me. Unlucky then if your 1st registration was 2nd April!!
