Average cost of repainting an IB?

Recommended Posts

I have had about five estimates for repainting my 911sc a different colour. They range from £1000 (really) to £12k.

The colour is going from yellow to green. I want the inside of the bonnet and front bay painted, the door shuts etc, basically everything to make it look green all over. The engine bay has already been painted.

I am thinking that £5k should cover it including replacing any necessary rubberwork and repairing the odd small ding on some panels. Is this realistic?

By and large you get what you pay for. £5k should get you a decent paint job from a reputable outfit. How about stripping out the car and removing the old paint yourself? Good project, cuts the cost right down (saves paying bodyshop prices for unskilled work) and you will get to see for yourself any problem areas which need treating.

£12k is taking the mick.

Think 'bout this myself, don't know if I'll have the guts to do it. There's a JCB, landini and Massey in my fathers yard that may get a going over to test the water before I make a decision.

Wonder what a Massey would look like with flames?

depends where you go I guess, on my 912e I had the whole shell repainted for £1200 part of that was an insurance claim so actual cost to me was £500 inc excess. Was a full windows and trim off job, doors, bonnet and engine lid where bare metalled with repair work to lower edges of front screen and the roof where a pair of ladders fell. Only thing that wasn't done was the bumpers and valance which weren't too bad anyway. All 2 pack GP white done in an oven. Had my Karmann Ghia done a few years ago to a good standard for similar money and that included full finish inside and out, painted dash, all in a different colour, different place though.

Best thing I did was take a couple of days off work and visit as many places as I could until I found one I trusted, on both instance they were one of the cheapest options.

Whilst both were not show finishes they were certainly of high quality and lasted well. Both these shots were a couple of years after the repaint. Both within Derbyshire so not far from you Manks, not sure if they're both still operating though, I certainly know one is on Ripley.

Specialist paint they have a good rep for there work heard nothing bad about them. I had a qoute looking at around £5k that is with replacing all the rubbers on the car like windscreen, bumpers etc.

Best place for you to go to in Notts is Auto Body Tec in Sandiacre. http://www.autobodytec.co.uk/index.html

You won't get a better job or price. Speak to Ian or Steve.

£5k is more than enough by any standard so long as there is not huge ammounts of other work to be done at the same time. A proper repaint on a 911 will be doors odd, bonnet, boot etc. All locks latches that sort of thing, best to drop it in as a shell with just door locks so when they put the doors back all can be aligned. I paid for £2500 for mine but it was from a friend, few teething bits but got it all sorted and the car looks great now. Oh and he is a porsche speialist to but im down in Essex so maybe bit far unless your willing to transport it.

As Tripe says, if you can do all the stripping yourself you will save a lot of money, stripping and refit an IB is very time consuming as the fixings on the bumpers and various bits of rubber are bound to break. I always advise customers of this problem, meaning that all the bellows and most of the rubber bumper trims will need replacing. If you want to get a proper job done in the luggage area the fuel tank, wiring and heating system all need to come out, again very time consuming. If you just supplied a rolling shell with the doors stripped, whaletail off, etc then I would guess at around £2.5K but you also need to budget for some rust repairs when the front wings and sill covers are removed :(

I got quoted £3k ("but allow £4k...") to do my cabrio. That includes the ali corrosion on the bumpers being sorted out and the bit of corrosion by the windscreen (usual spot by the screen in bottom left) being re-metaled and sorted out.

Doing nothing for now as corrosion by screen hasn't moved since I bought it and waiting until my resolve cracks...and I want to change the hood (as makes a little more sense then).

Always thought the quote was a bit steep (as no VAT here, etc) but it's not exactly cheap to live here...

This is all good advice and you can save a bundle if you strip the paint and fittings yourself but, having done this myself only recently, I found the paint stripping very tough and unpleasant what with the chemicals and all. I probably wasn't doing it in the best way being a novice, but it took quite a number of weekends - it's a great voyage of discovery though and you get to know the car intimately! The range of prices from £4K to £10K+ does sound realistic if you find any unexpected bodywork issue at all. I started with a 5K budget but ended up going over that to clean everything up and I certainly thought the hourly rate at 911 Bodyshop (in london) was reasonable after shopping around.

Cheers,

Thomas

The hourly rate is an interesting point that does not appear to have been covered, only the total price. Has anyone compared? When my SC was hit by a truck at Castle Combe last year I got a quote for the repairs from the OPC approved bodyshop and someone who was recommended to me. They quoted within half an hour of the same time to do the job but the OPC shop wanted £42.50 per hour and the other guy was £28. Worth checking to see where you money is going I guess.
