Anybody go to the Specialist Cars' Croft Day 22nd May?

Gave up going to these a few years back when I realised how much they were compared to other track day organisers.

 

were usually a good craic though

I went to watch :blush: that Ruf is bloody lovely. I chatted to the guy who owns it for quite a while. He told me it was bought from Porsche as a standard 930, the owner then took it straight to Ruf and asked them to build him a 930 Clubsport and they did :lol: it puts out 380bhp apparently and has a dial on the dash for adjusting the boost!!

Nick, I've been going on track for three years. Never had a smash, not even been close to smashing so go for it. Go with decent organisers, drive within your comfort zone and no problem.

Nick, which part of the circuit did the 997 crash at ?

 

The bend before the hairpin that goes onto the start/finish straight, it span and a 993 couldn't get out of the way, ended up getting T-boned so to speak! Front of the 993 didn't look to good but fared better than the 997.

they must have been pretty close under braking to come together :(

 

 

I've always kept my distance from other cars on track & specifically been taught to come off the throttle & drop back from a car thats just passed for the very reason they might overcook the next bend & I don't want to be caught up in the mess

That's the start of the complex then; where the big green bus is on the horizon in front of you. Technical little section really, but he'll have gone in way too hot or trail braked into the apex.

 

I agree though James; for an incident like that to happen it seems they were far too close together.

Always a shame to see this sort of thing - feel for the owners.

 

Easy to be clever in hindsight and without all the facts but these sort of things can usually be avoided. Its similar to road driving in that experience teaches you to provide an allowance for others to make a mistake as well as yourself.

 

Several potential accident scenarios -

 

 

 

An impatient driver pushing your rear bumper even before youve got to a safe point to move over. Stay cool, dont be pressurised or rise to the challenge and move over as soon as you can.

 

You approach a much slower car (speed it is being driven not necessarily speed potential) and after a lap or so of patiently waiting for him to move over the driver decides hes going to drag race you along every straight section. Drop back or pit and let the clown have his glory rather than collect him at the next bend when he finally looses it!

 

Processions - multiple combinations of the above with emotions climbing = accident potential - drop back or pit for a breather asap!

 

 

 

 

Regarding the second point "cooking" 996s, Boxsters and even 996 Turbos are great for this. Some drivers of these machines just cannot bear to move over for a 25 year old IB.

 

Easier said than done but experience teaches you to pit as soon as you feel the red mist!

You know, reading all this and thinking back to the day, it was waiting to happen! At one point I counted ten cars blasting down the start finish straight, only a couple of car lengths between them all! there was also 3 964 RS's, blue, pink and green quite obviously racing one another, lap after lap, great to watch, really good but could have so easily ended in tears, or worse :blush:

Didn't see it myself but it happened between the Jim Clark Esses and Sunny In. The 993 span off onto the inside of the circuit and on spinning back onto the track T boned the 997. And Colin in the 997, after dusting himself down was back out on track in the afternoon.

 

 

3 964 RS's, blue, pink and green quite obviously racing one another, lap after lap, great to watch

 

The maritime blue one was a 964 C4 and it went very well didn't it.
