On a 78 SC where can I find the engine number? (no smart answers like 'on the log book' thanks!)

It looks to me, that the 3.0 and 3.2 cylinders and pistons are the same? Can anyone confirm this?

Looks like the big fan shroud is painted red? I was thinking whilst the engine is in bits that I might get all the tinware tidied up, get the red bit done again in red powder coat, what about the other bits? powder coat black? silver? zinc plate? How were they finished?

Thanks!

Fan shroud is FG so you ain't powdercoating that. Lots of info on the board on refurbing, replating and powdercoating, have a search for it.

Thank you very much, excellent info.

I read in the service history that the owner was advised in 2000 that the engine needed a rebuild. In 2004 a Porsche independant garage replaced the engine with a secondhand unit.

The car has only covered 1700 miles since it came here from Hong Kong in 1998.

So today, on the off chance I called the garage that did the swap, I have a stack of invoices from them, the chap remembered the car very well, even remembered the name of the owner and that the first thing they did was replace the alternator. They looked after the car for about 4 years.

But then guess what? He has still got the old engine in his shed. Minus the induction system that stayed on the car. Apparently the bottom end is rumbling.

He says that when it was running well it went like stink, so much so that he thinks its a 200 hp model.

The link you provided and the V5 shows that the engine he has is the correct one for the car, the engine in the car is a 1979 180hp unit, 6393434

I'm not sure what to do now, I'm not yet sure what is up with the engine in the car, its something like a piston skirt dropped off or a broken con rod.

So much for SC motors being strong, my car has eaten 2 of them!

I'm due to chat with the chap later in the week, I quite like the idea of re-uniting the engine with the car, a bottom end regrind and new shells, rings etc and I might be in business!

The early engines are fast enough, hard to tell them apart from the 204s. You shouldn't really grind 911 cranks.

Piston skirt is not unheard of, but a snapped rod is a rare thing.

Why not grind a 911 crank? I had heard its generally frowned on and that there is a demand for nominal size cranks, I see .25mm oversize shells for re-ground cams are available.

Whats the reason for not doing it?

Debris I found in the sump. Is that a gudgeon pin circlip?

I also found that the throttle appeared to be stuck wide open, it snapped shut when I disconnected the linkage, the loud pedal has a socket moulded into the underside, there is a rod with a ball shaped end which locates into this socket, that is apart....not sure what is going on here, but I suspect the throttle stuck wide open and that it why I bought a car with a broken engine.

Needless to say a very careful examination of the throttle controls will be undertaken before I start the car post rebuild.

No nasty shocks found yet, pulling engine out tomorrow.

Gudgeon pin circlip indeed - and piston bits I re-con.

I have a spare Dempsey engine book if you are interested.

Let's keep the story of this build in one thread. I will merge the previous ones.

Sorry Sir. Do I get a detention?

The plot thickens, it looks like the throttle linkage came apart up by the transmission, the rod dropped onto the drive shaft, the drive shaft grabbed hold of it and gave it a good yank, its wrapped right round the shaft then disappears into the engine bay.

I made contact with the family of the chap I believe it happened to last night, address on log book and bt.com residential numbers, he is going to call me, I reckon he had an exciting few minutes!!

Edit - follwed by some huge disappointment. Poor chap.

so who's going to be the first to check the condition of their throttle linkage!

Posted

I dont suppose anyone will see this, all outside checking their throttle linkages!

This crack of removing engines out the bottom is the easiest I have ever done by miles, just done it single handed without breaking a sweat (well almost, beads were forming).

Its on the floor

See picture of linkage rod wrapped around CV joint!!

Worst bit of being on your own is trying to drag the trolley jack out from underneath with the engine balancing on top. Especially if on an un-even surface and the tinyest bit of grit can jam the wheels. Big sheet of thin ply of MDF on the ground helps.

Who's is the sharknose?

Yeah, and my mates are all at work and my old man is not answering his phone, he'll have guessed I need a lift.

JD asked about the bimmer, its my daily driver (dual role also as moving wheelie bin with boot full of junk and tools), love it to bits, the missus named him 'Stinky' cos apparently he smells a bit inside! Its a 520i Auto, one family ownership, then the old boy pass on and I bought him 18 months ago, was 57k miles, now 73k miles, have done some maintenance and a few odd jobs but the shell is excellent, after 45 odd cars he is the best! I refer to him as my pimps car!

Plug came out of right rear cylinder, others look fine. Picture not very clear, but plug tip is mashed and bent, hmm.

All tidied up and in for a spot of lunch!

Fast work mate and with pics too!
