Any chance of a picture of the much neglected and little understood (by me at least) rear (or front I guess) of the engine?

No problem - here you go - rear tinware not fitted yet:

Time for another photo heavy update......

Engine finished with re-painted fan shroud so thought I'd take some proper pictures while its still clean !

Started on the other bits, used the good weather last weekend to get the back end of the car out the garage and give the engine bay and rear bulkhead a degrease and pressure wash:

DSC00610.jpg

Much cleaner - just waiting for it to dry fully before applying the Wurth underbody wax

DSC00615.jpg

Started on another home made tool - work out what it is yet ?

I didn't like how unstable the engine was on the jack so thought I'd make a proper jacking cradle. Used some 100 x 50mm steel channel probably a bit OTT but better safe than sorry ! Welded it all together tonight:

DSC00623.jpg

Bolts onto the jack so good and solid.

Made up some wooden blocks to protect the engine & H/E. Also means I can fit different blocks to work with different engines \ transmissions etc.

DSC00627.jpg

Load is taken along the crankcase centerline with the "wings" under the H/E to stop it tipping

Tried it out, worked well - lifted the engine (& engine stand !) no problem - very stable even when 4ft in the air

Damn you Matt, no one's ever going to top this, so no one will ever do a thread like this again! ;)

Top banana Max. :ani_clapping:

Blimey, your "helping hand" tool engineering is better than most companies mainstream stuff. Brilliant work mate.

He hasn't done too bad a job has he. :D

Almost a shame to put the motor back in the car now, it looks that nice.

Cheers guys !

I'm happy to loan fellow IB owners any of the "special" tools once I've got my engine back in. The main ones I've had to make during my rebuild are:

- engine stand adapter

- slide hammer for G50 clutch cross shaft

- cam sprocket locking tool

- engine cradle for trolley jack

I take my hat off to you Matt. A superb project and really interesting to follow. :ani_clapping:

The question going through my mind is what's next? Having seen your 911 there can't be much left to do now.

My bet is there'll be another 911 in the garage soon and the start of another masterclass for us all to follow!

Getting there at last... treated the rear bulkhead with Wurth underbody coating, also got some cavity wax into the cross beam:

DSC00637.jpg

Got the engine off the stand and fitted the rear tinware and crank sensors, also new crank breather pipes (another speedy delivery from Tripe :ani_clapping: ):

DSC00644.jpg

Then spent a frustrating 2hrs+ fitting a new clutch slave cylinder because the clutch line nut was seized solid - judging by the colour of the brake fluid that came out I don't think it had been off (or bled !) since new.

Engine finally going in :

DSC00652.jpg

And in  - not all connected up yet but managed to get the clutch bled and throttle linkage sorted:

Off karting tomorrow, then Germany Monday so first run will probably have to wait until next W/E.....

It lives :yahoo:

Fitted the oil tank this morning and connected up the oil system - added 10 litres of Castrol 20W50 mineral oil and gave it a final check over...

Cranked for oil pressure - took about 20 seconds to build pressure. Then refitted the DME relay and gave it a go - started first time

DSC00671.jpg

Gave it 20mins of 1800rpm fast idle as per Wayne Dempsey's recommendations.... felt more like an hour ! Think my neighbours also know its finished now :whistling:

Dropped the oil and refilled with another 10ltrs of mineral oil and gave it another 10mins fast idle - all OK no strange noises. Slight panic when I saw a puddle under the car.... turns out it was cavity wax - looks like I went a bit OTT with the wax in the suspension turret crossmember !

Off to the Post Office first thing in the morning to get a tax disc... then fingers crossed for some decent weather to get the run-in under way.

Absolute credit to you mate.

You have done a cracking job :signs118:

Top job Max :ani_clapping: Now wait for the paranoia of any little engine noise. Have you any alternator bearing noise? sure mine are making a dry swirling noise, never noticed it before. Oh theres the paranoia again!!!! Whats the next job planned?? I'm just off to get some LED dash lights today, blue i think (that bloody Jammo :ani_clapping: ) then wheel refurb. ££££££££

Coxy,

dont hesitate with the blue LED's, they make for a cracking dash at night,,,,, they really are not chav at all but great on the eyes - no squinting or the traditional dull, yellowish tinge, but just a wonderful deep blue glow. I had a VW Bora as a hire car a while ago and thought 'got to get me some of these puppies'.

The needles also have a brighter red to them - easier to see at a glance.

Good luck with them. (bzzz, fizzz, spitt - extinguisher please).

Thanks for all the encouragement folks - it really helped when it was freezing cold mid winter and I was cleaning my cam carriers with a toothbrush.....

No strange noises yet - maybe a slight "swirl" from the alternator, definitely suffering from the post rebuild paranoia - went down to the garage this morning half expecting to see oil all over the floor. Got it taxed this morning, just waiting for the rain to stop and I'll give it a first run.

I'm planning to get the run-in done pretty quickly then get it back on the dyno and see if I've recovered any of the missing horses - it was down about 25hp prior to the rebuild. Then hope to fit a Steve Wong chip and dyno again. After this aim is to drive it as much as I can :steering:

Next winter is suspension rebuild time...
