Mine started out with exactly the same symptoms first light was on below 2000RPM then after a while was on all the time, then battery was flat Also turned out to be the alternator, as suggested get someone to test it, repair of your alternator will almost certainly prove to be cheaper than replacement
-
Can anyone recommend anywhere where I can get an SC alternator (external regulator) repaired / refurbed, the copper slip rings have all but completely worn away I Would preferably prefer somewhere near Peterborough if anyone knows of anyone?

Happy to offer advice along the way, most special tools I have are borrowed from elsewhere.. I have a few parts left over
-
I have just finished my rebuild on 1981 SC and mine was older style cam nuts, my advice would be to wait until it is apart or take the covers off first to see which type you have

Well Saturday was the day to get the engine back into the car, one more picture of it all finished before taking it off the stand Car jacked up waiting to be reunited with engine Clutch and gearbox attached and ready to reconnect to car With car jacked up to 40" the engine easily clears the bottom of the car Everything reconnected and after a few minor teething problems and a little bit of head scratching hey presto it's alive!! -
Mine was exactly the same, simply cleaned it up and left it!

I managed to assemble most of the rest of the engine over the weekend Fitted alternator fan and fan shroud, I had to remove all the powder coat from the edges of the fan to ensure it cleared the fan housing. I also ended up fitting alternator in reverse to its original position and to the photos I took of my wiring so much head scratching whilst I transposed cables to ensure they all went back in the same place Fitted rest of remaining ancilaries All that remains now is to fit rest of parts when they arrive, straight through pre-silencer (from Turbo Thomas) and oil pipe clamps (from Porsche) and then to modify heater backdate pipe to miss distributor. All being well will be back in the car at the weekend -

Funny you should mention those, I saw your post yesterday asking for clamp, I have looked at the pictures of my engine before I took it apart and have confirmed that no clamps were present on either side, anyone any ideas where I can get them from, I would need both sides? -
