Hi there, Porschefans;

As a longtime Porschaholic (not an owner yet, but working on it) I recently discoverd this forum and, as I did on a few other fora I decided to turn to you guys & gals to help me in my quest for information. The subject of my curiosity is a rather obscure 911: the 1979 SC 3,1. This version, that was probably a sort of evolutionary step in the development of the later Carrera 3,2 is basically a hi-performance version of the 180hp(Euro)SC. It's barrels are of the 97mm 3,3l Turbo-size, but most likely feature a 9,8:1 compression ratio. Combined with a retuned CIS and a different exhaust system this resulted in 210hp at slightly higher revs plus a useful increase in torque. Interestingly the engines, of which 100 are rumoured to be built an sold in complete cars, were already equipped with hydraulic distribution chain tensioners. In 1979, mind you!

A variation on this theme could be the performance kit the factory would install as an option on 180hp-Euro cars, of which some 1000 were supposedly sold.

Any information on this car or engine would be very welcome.

Some info can be found through these links, one in French, the other in errr, well English of some kind....

I posted an almost identical topic on the Pelican Parts' forum a few days ago and already receieved some interesting response.

Hi Hans, welcome to the forum. I replied to that Pelican thread and love Jim Williams' pictures, they are great.

When I was in the PCGB, there was a thread on their forum about the 3.1 motor (many moons ago) and I seem to remember that Bones, our then Register Secretary (the club contact for the SC's) alluded to some additional knowledge he had picked up on the 3.1's. He comes on here sometimes and is worth talking to about it, just in case he knows something we don't (apart from all the other stuff he knows that we don't that is).

If you see what I mean B)

Hi there, John;

"If you see what I mean", he asked him knowingly....

Thanks for the kind welcome. I'll see if can I find the thread on the PCGB forum you mentioned.

Hi there, Porschefans;

Newsflash:

http://www.marktplaats.nl/index.php...e/33163303.html

Car has almost certainly been sold to a german Porsche mechanic who was following rumours about this actual car being on sale in Holland. A small community, this 3,1-clan. Wonder if they have a dresscode and a secret handshake? :unsure:

Shame to see a nice rare SC like this wearing Cup wheels and a Carrera badge. Good find Hans.

Hi Hansv, the 3.1s are rare but they weren't built as a part of a 'production run'. These cars were ordered directly from the factory by customers wanting a bit more go from their SC, 'customer specials' if you like. The standard car was taken to Weissach to have the barrels and pistons fitted and the adjustments to the rest of the engine made. I believe there are a hundred but I don't think that is an exact figure. The engine casings are stamped '3.1' on the genuine item. If you want more info I suggest you contact Stuttgart as there is a fair bit of 'made up' info on these cars on the web, they are about as rare as the 911SCRS which is much more desirable to collect if rarity appeals to you. If someone tells you they have one check the engine casing first to ID it.

Hi there, Bones;

Thanks for the info. So according to your knowledge the 100 special cars mentioned in this:

http://club911.net/article.php?sid=147&amp...amp;order=0#3l1

article were not built as a series, but modified individually. Sounds plausible, but that still leaves the questions about the prototype chain tensioners and the dual exhausts unanswered. But the Frenchman could be misinformed also. A wise suggestion to drop a line in Stuttgart as well, I just might do that.

By the way, I'm not searching for one of thoes exotics to buy, it just happened that I found the yellow SC advertised with a 3,1. This triggered me to go looking for some more detailed data on the subject.

Just to add to the info: Peter (bones) is dealing with an enquiry of a 3.1 LHD targa at PCGB. 1980 model year.

I hope he is able to provide a bit further information.

best regards,

I don't believe the 3.1 SC was an 'evolutionary step' in the sense that Porsche manufactured it as such but it may well be as all steps to the next model of 911 are evolutionary in true Porsche tradition. The 3.1s were 'Weissach Specials', an option given to a hundred or so customers to get back the power taken from the SC in the attempt to make it less popular than the new 928, the car Porsche planned to take over from it ....lol......!!

I think the work was carried out in Werk 1 and I don't recall hydraulic chain tensioners as being part of the package. This is an ideal opportunity for you to put all the rumours to rest, write to AG and find out the truth about the 3.1ltr option and what exactly is inside your car.

I've never heard of the 'performance kit' offered for the 180 bhp cars, are you speaking about the paragraph in Bruce Anderson's book where mentions the re-cylidered/pistoned 3.2 SC, making 220bhp? Also modded in Werk1 and by approved tuners.

I don't think he has a car Bones, think it's more of an academic question...

I've been swapping emails with the factory on a few things lately. There are some good guys over there, very helpful people.

John

I've always wanting to pursue the exact RHD production numbers for the Carrera 2.7 and Carrera 3.0 (coupes and targa's)

I have been emailing with people from Australia and South Africa who contacted me because of my car and Guy White at PCGB doesnt have the production RHD numbers. In fact, IIRC he doesnt even have the number of officially imported C 2.7's and c3 from Porsche Cars GB.

Would you be able to find out more from your contact at Porsche? Alternatively, I will go over to Stuttgart in June and I will make preparations to find out more nearer that time.

Best regards,

Bert
