Heatshield IIRC

Don't think so, as I used all the holes for the Heat Protection shield and they were speed nuts not tapped M6 holes (the hole are not shown on parts diagrams)

They don't seem to line up with anything in particular.

Its like the bumper needs to move in by about 15mm the holes would then be hidden under the rubber seal.

Its got me beat !

Rear Bellows and qtr panels next..

I would suggest they have most likely been drilled by a previous owner for reasons unknown. I've never seen 'factory' holes in that location on any of the UK cars I've restored.

Cheers

No all 3.2 Carrera and later Turbo bumpers have them.

What are they for, interested to know?

I have a couple of spare rear bumpers removed from 3.2 coupes in the garage and neither have them...

OK not all 3.2s then. AFAIK the holes are superfluous on a 3.2.

The Turbo uses the same bumper and has an additional piece of heat shielding that fits behind the bumper so I believe the holes are to secure that.

Not just the Turbo, my '84 3.2 had the heat shield fitted.

From the state of it and the fixings I would guess it was their from the factory. Although PET only lists it for the Turbo.
