Some Minor Paintwork....

Recommended Posts

What started out as sorting a few rust bubbles under the headlights and around the rear arches has finally turned into a full glass-out respray - one thing lead to another as usual with car projects !

Stripped the car down myself and treated all the rust areas to save some cash - had to weld some minor areas but sills, kidney bowls etc. were all solid. Dropped it all off at the bodyshop last week to let the professionals take over.

Went to have a look today and its coming on well - most the preparation is complete and paint will be going on early next week (Diamond Blue):

Started writing a list of all the new seals, rubbers, gaskets that I'm going to need when I put it back together - soon became a very long list !

Going to have to tell the wife I having more than just the front wings painted soon.... :whistling:

Nice work, where are you having it done?

Its being done at a small paintshop very close to where I live - called M&N Coachworks. Its a one man outfit but in a modern purpose built workshop - with oven, paint mixing etc. I've seen the quality of his work before as he does all the paintwork for the "special vehicles" division of the company I work for. Best thing has been the flexibility - he was happy with me doing some of the prep and also the finishing the dismantling in his workshop once I'd dropped it off, this meant I could tow the car in rather than having to trailer it.

I've got one looks just like that in my garage at the moment - hopefully going off to the bodyshop next week. :D

know what you mean about the seals etc.. - I've got a similar list and it's very easy to underestimate how much all of these little bits add up.

Come on, think about it. You've had the wings resprayed and the rest has machine polished up really well :D A kick in the nads is never a nice thing and should be avoided at all costs!

The seal issue is a pain though. The list never stops growing, as I found out when I rebuilt the 3.2  Looking like a really good job though and you can't beat the look of a car in fresh paint.

Had a look at my old window rubbers with the painter yesterday - he reckons I can re-use all of these as they're not perished and will go back in a lot easier than new window rubbers. This would reduce the total cost of the seals and rubbers considerably - anyone else re-used or always gone for new rubber ?

Only replace where necessary! I used all my old window rubbers again, amongst others. Not only were they perfect, but they fitted perfectly, saved me cash and from past experience I know that replacement rubber often doesn't last very long before perishing.

Clean it thoroughly inside and out and re-use it.

Went to see how the car's coming today - the main panels have all been painted with 2K basecoat and 3 coats of 2k Laquer.

All looks good and very shiny, the paint was baked in the oven but the painter wants to leave it to "rest" for another 5 days before giving it a light polish. He's painted the first batch of odds and ends also - bumper corners, door mirrors etc. Just got the bumpers and valances to go - decided the front bumper was in such a state I've taken it to a specialist to be taken back to bare metal and given a coat of aluminium etch primer, then back to the bodyshop to be filled and painted.

Think I've got a final list of seals and rubbers now..... comes to around £500 :o

A few pics of progress:

Got my car back at home now and I've made a proper start on resassembling today. Quite pleased with progress so far - have manged to re-fit all the fixed windows this morning. Wife wasn't too pleased with me cleaning all the window rubbers in the bath though - got a bit of cleaning to do there later on !

The rear window was definitely the most difficult of the bunch - ended up doing it twice as the aluminum insert popped out first time round - key thing was to get the top edge in first (tip from 101 Projects for you Porsche).

Time for some lunch now (and to put some plasters over the blisters from pulling the nylon cord !)

First day of reassembly finished - got quite a bit done:

- windscreen, rear screen and side windows fitted

- engine lid grille and rear wiper motor refitted

- door mirrors refitted and wiring connected (they even work !)

- door handles refitted

- scuttle beadings installed

Here's a few pictures of progress:

Should get the door frames and bumpers back later this week ready for the next session over the bank holiday weekend. :)

Looks fantastic, your guy has done a great job. He sounds like someone we should know about Matt ;)

Thanks John. Yes - I'm really pleased with the finish. Having spent a day with the car I've managed to find just a couple of minor imperfections in the laquer but I had to look really hard to find these. The painter wants me to take the car back once resassembled so he can give a final check and polish, he says he'll sort anything I find then.

If anyone's interested in using him then I suggest they PM me and also take a look at my car first to see the finish etc.

Made some more progress with the reassembly over the weekend - been going a bit slowly recently as I've been away in Germany on business. Got the door frames and bumpers back from the paintshop this week - really pleased with the finish:

So jobs now done:

- Headlights refitted

- Rear lights rebuilt painted and fitted

- Rear bumper, valance and bellows back on - very fiddly !

- Wurth cavity wax in sills, front and rear chassis members

- Rear arches sprayed with Wurth underbody wax

- Door frames rebuilt and refitted with new felt runners and scrapers

- Sill covers fitted

what finish did you go for on the door frames - satin painted or powdercoated?, I need to make a decision about mine soon.

I've painted some of the other exterior trim in Wurth Satin Black (RAL9005) but it seems a bit glossy at the moment hopefully it will weather down a bit.

your car looks very smart BTW - you're making better progress than I am at the moment - still waiting for the glass to be refitted, was supposed to be Friday but the fitters bought the wrong windscreen which they then spent a comical hour trying to force onto the car before noticing it had a 964 part no. (correct for some '88-'89 cars but not mine!)

I've had the door frames and all the other black aluminium trims satin painted - they've had a coat of 2k etch primer and then been sprayed in a tough satin black paint that's specified for use on bumpers and trims etc. The painter's given me a spray can of the paint in case I damage anything whilst refitting - I can check the manufacturer and code tonight. The satin finish isn't far off the original.

Good luck with getting your glass in - I think I was fortunate how well mine went back in (using the original rubbers helped). My current struggle is getting the door frames to fit properly - you would have thought they came from a different car ! I've struggled for 3-4hours so far and they're close but I'm still not happy with the aligment. Decided to move onto bumpers and come back to the doors when I got some more patience.

It sounds like something is not right with the frames, they should drop in and line up with a couple of tweeks of the mounting screws. Have you refitted the bracket at the base of the centre upright?

Yes - I was expecting them just to drop back in. I braced the frames whilst they where out to ensure they didn't get distorted during painting. Main problem is with the driver's side frame - its very tight at the top front corner above the quarterlight - unless I pull this back very hard whilst tightening the various screws I can't close the door.... I've taken the frame back out a couple of times to check for any obstructions but nothing obvious. Also checked the bracket for the centre upright was the right way round and not causing the problem (i.e. its still tight without this fitted).

Suggestions welcome ! Going to have a look at it with fresh eyes later tonight...

Finished at last ! After four weekends and many late nights I've finally got it all back together - really pleased with the end result.

Getting the driver's side door frame aligned was a bit of a nightmare - but with some help from the painter and a bit of brute force we got there in the end. Been for a great drive over the South Downs this afternoon - was also the first drive since replacing the complete exhaust, oil pipes, front brakes and doing a full service - all working well so far.

Found a great spot overlooking the Downs and had to take some photos:

Thanks again to all those who've given advice and encouragement along the way.
