Twinny and I met up with Rich Thomas at WRC's new Dyno at Linden Special Vehicles last week, to test a number of rear mufflers, using my Targa as the mule!

First off was Twinny's Targa to check that the Dyno was calibrated to match the Silverstone installation.

Two sets of matching results proved that was indeed the case.

Next we ran my Targa with the Dansk muffler that returned 252.6 bhp at Wayne's Chipswizards Dyno in December.

This produced 249 bhp - so a 3.6 bhp difference in readings between the two Dynos, since Twinny's result set the reference.

After that came the muffler that Rich Thomas really came to see perform.

And this did produce the goods with 252.3 bhp.

So an increase of 3.3 bhp over the Dansk, and this would have given approx 256 bhp at Waynes.

Below is the Chipswizard printout with the Dansk fitted.

The difference on the road is pretty clear - the Turbo Thomas muffler produces a far more urgent response, and the bonus is a deep, refined sound, which

I find much more satisfying than the muted Dansk, or the way too loud & raspy (for my road use) M&K that was originally on the car.

The next step may be a TT pre-muffler, which will change things again ...

Yep the ol' Targa was still on the money. BHP the same as before with torque now up a bit, running at 243lbs/ft! :)

Chris said he'd be ready to go in a couple of weeks. Got a big project on the go in Deutsch.

Good results and comprehensive test, did the A/F graph change much between the 2 mufflers?

Are we sure running a 911 at that angle balls to the wall is a good idea?

Some nice results there Rich. Good to know the Dyno is giving the same figures as the Silverstone install :D

Will have to get Dyno Day II sorted out soon!

All in all, we ended up with a top result all round -

Chris was well pleased - since the results showed the set-up was working and ready to go.

Rich Thomas was chuffed to bits to see his new design improve on the Dansk figures, and prove that his muffler really does do the business. :)

I had even more performance out of the Targa ....

And Twinny had his results confirmed again!

Chris was let down by the late fan install, but a bit of quick thinking that morning solved things with a large fan sat almost in the engine bay ....

Electrics were going in while we were there, so the full set up should be just about ready now.

As they say - bring 'em on!

the TT exhaust sounds nice

+1, the one on the Targa sounds better than Nige's TT pipe IMO

Good to get back to back verified data versus an established performer, well done Twinny for putting yours on first.

I still prefer more of a ring from a 911 exhaust though, the low burbly stuff doesn't do it for me. Could be that is just a 3.2 thing, but then I love the sound of RB's car.

Good work guys

I agree with you there John, when's my updated exhaust coming then ;)

Think the larger bore and Rich's remap and the targa will be the differences.

Had a terrific run back to Nottm last night - the new muffler on top of the remap makes the old gal just fly!

I'm away next week in France, so should be back at Rich T's the week after for the surgical procedure incl fitting of his pre-muffler :o

When my other half asks why all these trips to Brum, Rochdale and Northants I just say its normal 911 procedure to check the tuning is OK ;)

That's quite different to mine, the silencer on yours is alot smaller.

Was a good ride back, eventually got some fuel after missing the junction twice! I blame Bert.

During the session I asked TT if the box needed to be so long? He thought he could take maybe 150mm off it without affecting performance. My H&S is much more compact than the TT trial versions

Is the new one now shorter Rich?

I think Rich T is still thinking through the Mk II ... but I see no reason as you say, for the box being longer than necessary.

So a 150mm trim could I think be in order.

I wondered what the pair of you were up to taking a quiet back road on a late Monday evening ....

You don't think the sound difference between Nige's and mine (my Mk I being longer) is part due to the extra length, which produces the deeper sound?

Nige's is definately higher in tone or pitch, and physically shorter ... - mine might be a bit like having a longer organ pipe, so it has a deeper resonance.

Maybe we can select the aural quality we prefer ....

thats good results. keep in mind that most mufflers will only give you a swing of+-4 bhp so that proves the dyno results.. I have only ever seen a plus of 6hp in simply a muffler change. when you start fuel mapping for the muffler and other exhaust changes then you see the big benifits.
