  1. I agree, its cheap insurance. I've had a car jacked up sideways to some pretty rediculous angles, you just have to take care and assume the worst.
  2. Strange, the link works for me The Sealey (one ACE has) is nice but nearly £300 retail!!!!!!! I'd rather take my chances.... Here's another site http://www.ready2race.co.uk/shop/shop.php?...ull&id=1482 The Sealey one is not aluminum and weighs 42kg compared to the light weight Clarke @ 10.30kg!!! That's a BIG part of the reason for buying one imho, otherwise I'll stick with the heavyweight one I already have.
  3. This is the one I was talking about http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/...ks/brand/clarke I haven't seen a better one for the price. And yes, the jack plate can creep out of the hole so you have to be careful with it. I have heard that it causes stress to the area which can eventually crack. Rich
  4. I believe both have their merits. And surely the same principles apply for each as far as CR goes. I'd be interested in either option for my 911!
  5. As far as I am aware there are two methods for "running in", one for hp and the other for engine longevity. take your pick. And I agree, the reason Porsche rec warming a 911 by driving it has to be for better oil circulation.
  6. That's great that your car is fixed, I thought Autofarm had a good rep. "I'm glad you guys are all having luck with Fran and the guys. I am the biggest proponent of Tuthills on here, but let's remember that while they are very experienced, they are only human and these are old cars, so sometimes things go wrong. " I have to agree with that, they disposed of my silicon rocker gaskets (replaced with paper), and "forgot" my alignment specs! However, I would still recommend them.
  7. Same here, mine is a weekend car so generally gets treated to high octane stuff.
  8. Sorry guys, I didn't mean to hijack the thread my original question ".... Now forget about how you get there for a moment, but do you guys really think 300+ hp would be great? Why? Would you gain that much more out of the car?....." was about the whole 300hp thing in terms of cost/benefit (therefore relevant to this thread) rather than a pros and cons of a turbo thread. Rich
  9. Point taken but I was not necessarily talking about 930's in particular (but they are notorious for having no power without boost), but turbo'ed 911's in general. However, my original post was about the cost/benefits of more hp however it is achieved, na or boosted. My car is great fun already with 232hp, therefore will I gain that much in terms of WOW factor, driving experience, etc by spending all that money to acheive 300+hp?
  10. I'm going to speak to Protomotive about it if I end up going for it. I just wanted to see what opinions there would be on the value of the increased hp (however you achieve it). If I'm gonna drop £4.5k into a turbo, plus finally fitting those 930 brakes (which the insurance co have confirmed will be required), I don't want to regret it further down the line - rather each time I get in the car and drive it i want to think to myself "this is awesome.... " with a big grin on my face. A guy on Pelican did a 3.2 turbo (Protomotive) and was disappointed with the results because the boost was too high up the rpm range - he sold the car for an Elise about 12 months later.
  11. I hear what you are saying. I am reading about lots of turbo owners being disappointed because of the power delivery, which seems to be in real world road driving (not track) they rarely get the turbo well spooled up unless they really gas it - a peaky motor I guess. Whereas to really enjoy the benefits on the road you need the power throughout the rev range. Not sure about the CR but Protomotive are well respected and these are their figures (360hp without an IC). However you only have to look at how bad the IC was in the 930 to see it wasn't the best installation!
  12. Thanks Andy, I think you hit the nail on the head. I guess by "useable" the xtra power would be required to come in lower down the rpm band? Maybe the turbo is only a good idea if I will see significant gains at around 2,500-3,000 rpm. Not much point if its up the top end only.
  13. Just mulling over options etc, and I got thinking about the 230bhp my car currently has and the 360bhp a turbo would give me. Now forget about how you get there for a moment, but do you guys really think 300+ hp would be great? Why? Would you gain that much more out of the car? And I am ignoring the obvious kudos of having a high hp car! Rich
  14. B*stards. I don't understand why people buy this crap, but I guess if you've got a worn out engine anythings is worth a shot.
  15. Hi Rob, and welcome. So come on, what's the "real" car? Rich
  16. I have one of those. Its a great charger and can be used outside! *edit* just checked, mine is this one: http://www.ctek.com/EN/MXS3600/battery_types.asp Great for those of you with m/bikes to charge as well.
  17. Nick, Does the oil light come on? There was a brief period with my car when the oil light would come on and I am pretty sure the ! light at the same time - definitely another light anyway. I assumed at the time that they shared the same fuse or something. I checked the oil and it was fine, and the problem has never returned so I think it was just electrical gremlins. Make sure your fuses and relays are secure etc. Just a thought. Rich

    Newbie with an SC Targa!

Welcome! Unfortunately not my other half Rich
  19. Yeah, I think unless you only drive it July and August you may be right!
  20. Oh really, I thought the later cars had better heat, perhaps they just had better ventilation? I'm toying with the idea of no heat. Not very practical for a UK car but mines only a weekender. Mmmmm.
  21. Tim, I am having fun going through all the archives at the mo and I must say superb write up mate! You don't muck about do you?! I couldn't tell from the photos, did you have to drill the front for the lovely ARB's? Did you go with the poly bronze A arm bushes? I am going to HAVE to meet up with you guys for a track day, since Tuthill set mine up it would be really interesting to see how they all compare. Excellent! Rich
  22. Yes, I use the jack plate. My car sits very low and I struggle to get the jack under the front lip. Check out the Machine Mart jack, its a very slim (low) aluminium one, I'll be buying one, its great value.
  23. An email I have in my archives: "The euro models typically come with the 10.3/1 c/r vs. the 9.5/1 c/r of the us models. Either way, na upgrades are fairly nominal, though you can definitely increase the drivability of the car with software, air filter, exhaust changes, etc. Typically, a good running option would be to run a set of equal length headers, probably ssi's with a dual inlet/single outlet type muffler, with a chip and airfilter. You'll probably have right around $2k for this type of performance upgrade, and it can be done over a weekend at your home. We had a client a while back that wanted the best performance out a 1986 3.2, similar to the 1974 RS's, so keeping it na. We ran into a wall at 250hp with the stock manifolding, this was with a mass flow sensor, large throttle body, modified exhaust, even to 1-3/4" headers, and an extrude honed manifold with 20/21 grind webcam camshafts. Once the manifold came off and a high butterfly manifold went on, it immediately went to 275hp. So, don't listen to a lot of claims out there, the results can be nice, but certainly not substantial. Todd Knighton Protomotive Inc. "
  24. Clarke's latest "racing" jack seems very good value. http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/...ks/brand/clarke
  25. I posted this link in another thread. http://www.miracledrywash.com I'm going to give it a try. Rich
