Bye Bye Rusty Bits

Recommended Posts

One question I do have is whether or not it's worth getting the wings e-coated? since they'll probably need some work after being dipped. To quote Mr P, answers on the back of a cheeseburger....

What sort of work? If you need major holes welding up or new metal put in then get that done first. Really want panels to be repaired and straightened (if necessary) BEFORE starting the finishing process .........

Hopefully only grinding the rust out, perhaps the odd welding of a hole. It shouldn't be that bad (famous last words)...

I think I will get them stripped and see how bad it is. They can always go back for the e-coat afterwards. Is the e-coat a lot better than a normal primer base? I guess so? I guess for £45 a wing it's a no-brainer?

I wouldn't bother e-coating if they have rust in, £90 plus the tax for a pair of wings is almost enough money to do a decent job of painting one. Just keep on top of your body maintenance and should never have to do it again mate, apart from stonechips (which e-coat won't help). Dipping a good idea IMO though, much better paint finish from bare metal.

The e-coat process will probably involve a full degrease, mild pickle/pre-etch, light zinc or mang phosphate conversion coating then the electrophoretic coating on top. On a repaired panel then the process should kill any rust or traces of rust and ensure that you have a sound well protected base to put spray coats on ..........

£45- seems a good price to me for a one or two off job ...........

Quick update on this...

Wings, boot lid and headlight rings are being stripped as we speak. I am going to drop them into Tuthills at the end of the week and then decide on whether or not to e-coat - some say yes, others have said don't bother, so I think I go with what John says at Tuthills)

I have stripped back some of the old underseal/schutz and now need to treat this - Nell sent me the zinc spray and the sealers, so I need to know if this is the correct order....

- strip & clean more with 3M discs

- Zinc spray

- POR15

- Seam sealer between wings and body when they are bolted up.

Hopefully I'll do everything apart from the fitting up. The car will then get trailored to Tuthills to be sprayed. I am hoping my budget will stretch to spraying the wings, bonnet, front scuttle, boot lid, head light rings and perhaps the doors - which John said he needed to blend in with the rest of the car. I'll probably then refit everything myself.... I only have a month to do this before Le Mans, so the clock is ticking now....

Next time I do some work on the car i'll take some pictures too.

You mean brush the sealer on and then put the wing on, right? Not bolt the wing up and then paint the sealer on?

Well I meant both really, brush the sealer on, bolt up the wing and the seal around the seam again.

Just do it once before you bolt up would be my advice. Seam sealer can pull away with chassis flex, trap all sorts of crap and you don't want wet grit rubbing against your lovely new wings.

Picked my wings up from surface processing today. I can't believe how much lighter they are after stripping all the crud and paint off them. Seriously, they must be 5kg lighter - I haven't actually weighed them as I have dropped them straight at Tuthills, but the difference is huge.

A couple of holes have appeared that weren't there before (rust related), one that's about 50p sized at the bottom of the wing, where it mounts to the sill. However, it should be an easy repair in bare metal. John wasn't there so didn't get to discuss it, but hopefully we'll sort it on Monday.

I can see why surface processing have the reputation for a good job but poor handling of parts - I winced as the guy put my wings on the floor with a clang.... They had some really interesting stuff up there though; I saw them taking in a whole VW split screen twin cab pick up, a Mk II escort and various other classics - nice

I'll take some pics of my wings when I go back over there next week.

Another update... Wings have been prepped by Tuthills and are now back at Surface Processing to be e-coated. Here are a couple of snaps.

This was a hole about the size of £2 coin

Car is booked in to be done in Mid May, so all going well I should be OK for Le Mans again now :yahoo:

They always have some really cool stuff in Tuthills - lovely 993 RS in there today, just been sold for £70K!

Looking good Northy, looking at your last pic reminds me that my oil lines are next on my list .I asked the sprayer at Tuts this week for a quote on my wing and he said dont bother doing it,refreshing to find a garage that wont quote for work that doesnt really need doing.

Had a call from John to say the car was finished, so whipped up there to have a quick look. He's done a top jop on it all, i'm well pleased :signs118: The whole front end is now pretty much perfect. The inner wings are fully protected, I can't see them rotting for a while - fully POR'd, Topcated and then clear wax oiled. It looks the business under there. I've been busying treating all the rubber work as well, so it should all match up with the new smile rubber and seams too. I am picking the car up tomorrow afternoon, so i'll start the reassembly later in the week - depending on my excitement levels and how much work I can put off until next week!

I'll get some photos of the finished job and post them up when it's done.

Cool, I bet yr excited to get it back together. I have never re-assembled a fresh painted car but seen lots of pics and it seems care is taken to tape over the corners of things to prevent any accidental damage. You have probably already got this in hand but thought I would mention it just in case.

Good luck mate.

They have already bolted up the wings and associated bits. They did it all before undercoat, topcoat and wax oil. The seams are really well sealed now.

All I have got to do is put the bumper rubbers back on, the side repeaters, headlights, sill covers and wing mirrors. :) I then need to treat that kidney bowl with some POR, which should see it out till next year when the IB fund is replenished!

Yeah I'm really excited about getting it all back together :yahoo: I am also getting tempted to do the track day at the end of June.... depends on how skint I am after Le Mans and a stag do earlier in the month.

Quick update....

All back together now... taxed and back on the road.

I had to have a play around with the front suspension because it seemed to have risen back up about 1/2" on both sides, I guess its the weight of all that crap I've cleaned out from under the wings. So I reset the ride heights, and re-did the rears too. I now have it exactly as I want it; not too low, just a nice purposeful height and some back to front rake. At first I wasn't sure about the teardrop mirrors, but they are growing on me now. It's easy enough to change back if I later decide I don't like them. One thing though, they don't give you as good rear vision as the flag mirrors.

I took it out today for a good blast and a bit of a shake down before Le Mans, it feels stronger than ever and I absolutely loved it - it seems like ages since I have driven it! One final thing to do is get the wheels balanced all round now - those super smooth French roads always highlight any imbalance.

Here's a snap before it went back into the garage.

front-of-sc-small.jpg

Overall, I'm well pleased with the work carried out and are confident that the front end of my car is now rust proof for a good number of years. Tuthills did a great job, so I would definitely recommend them.

So that's one job off the list, onto the next one!

Well done bro, top class. Let's hook up for a coffee soon and can have a close look. I am at Silverstone for a trackday on Tuesday if you are about, meeting some top guys down there too. Got your text btw but was a bit pushed for time to reply, it arrived at beer o' clock ;)

No worries, I guessed you were busy! I'll try and pop up there on Tuesday, let me know what time.

Northy, just wondering how your treatment of the inner sill/wing and kidney bowl went? I stumbled across this thread as I've been giving mine a good clean out whilst shes off for the road for the winter and mines in a similar condition as yours was/is and I'm going to try and treat it to prevent it getting much worse untill I have the funds to repair it properly

Cheers
