Are 911 CV joints the same as Ford Sierra?

Recommended Posts

Look very close match to me.

Sierra;

A GKN Lobro out of my shed, it says for 911, 930, 964.

No mention of Sierra 1.3 GL.

What do you think?

Apart from minor colour differences that I guess are down to manufacturing process rather than spec it certainly has the same charactristics. Do GKN Lobro have a Sierra part listed?

I can't find Sierra joint kits listed in the catalogue, only driveshafts and boot kits.

Also just looked on the J&R site who are the manufacturers of the Sierra part above and they do not list any 911 parts.

I suppose it depends on the year 911.

The ones I have are the later 10mm bolt ones.

I think SCs have 8mm bolts.

Can't remember what size bolts the Ford uses.

'Budget' one is only boot kit.

CV joints don't come in many flavours

off the top of my head there are only two sized joints used

size 15, 108mm OD, 32mm thick, 94mm PCD, 6x 10mm bolts, this is used on 930, and maybe G50 gearbox cars,964, 993 models

size 13, 100mmm OD, 32mm thick, 86mm PCD, 6x 8mm bolts, used on all other IB 911 models

I'm sure yours will be a size 13 but please do your own checks, I have a pdf I can send which will give you all the dimensions you will need to check to make sure

The change in colour on the joint is surface hardeneing and I would only use GKN Lobro joints as all the cheap joints will be made of chocolate or cheese

What makes you think that they could be the same Jonny?

Just stumbled across a couple of items on eBay with Ford and 911 in the title

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NOS-FORD-ESCORT-CORTINA-CAPRI-SIERRA-GRANADA-PORSCHE-911-912-CV-JOINT-72GG4635BA-/260983042624?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cc3cd3240

And then this:

http://www.prolinx.biz/Driveshaft_prices.htm

As WC says, there seem to be just 100mm and 108mm commonly available, both made by GKN Lobro.

The GKN catalogue has a slightly different part # for XR4i and 911 but this could just be down to style of boot.

I might take a punt.

Yes, it is also used on late 915 cars too.
