So I wanted to do a full oil change as was moving from M1 to Silkolene + I had never cleared the grubby oil that my car arrived with. I started the mission with a regular oil drain from tank and case + removed the 2 oil filters. I then pulled the front oil cooler to tip the oil out and get access to the pipes along the sides of the car. After a few failed attempts to undo the pipes at the thermostat I started to think of a plan B. My first idea was to buy some thin pipe to stuff up the bigger oil pipes and try to syphon the oil off. I tried this and got tired of sucking so roughly hooked the hoover up to the pipe and it sucked the oil right along the lines - not wanting to fill my hoover with oil I jury rigged a big bottle with a pipe in and out of the cap. Hook the hoover up to one and stuff the other down ya oil lines and hey presto a full oil change on a 911. I unhooked a few other oil pipes and sucked the crap out of them then buttoned it all back up to fill back up with the good stuff. I recon I got a good 2-3 liters out the cooler and lines so pretty happy with effort/reward + I managed to flush the cooler out which should help its efficency.

Anyway heres a shot of the Oil Bong:

mroe like McGyver! or McJevvy

That is a very A-Teamesque solution Jevvy. I'm going to try that at the next oil change for sure.

You're a legend Jev!

Shame "the great egg race" isn't on telly anymore. You would've been great on that

Makes you wonder what Heinz WOlff would think of Jevvy, doesn't it? Great idea though he obviously has too much time on his hands (working from home indeed)

Well done Jevvy, great idea, but as Kieran rightly points out, probably best not to tell the wife about your new use for her Vacuum. Wives tend not to see the great amount of thought and skill in such simple but effective uses of an every day household appliance..... they think it's just for the carpet.

LOL, that is definitely Jevvy's vacuum, can't imagine Babs paying much attention to what happens with the hoover ;)

your a star Jev did you ever go on "Why Dont You" when you was a kid ? :D

No mate too busy TWOC'ing cars and smoking bongs! - remember I'm from Blyth!

Pleased you guys found it amusing. I searched on pelican but no-one seemed to have come up with a method of getting the oil out the pipes without removing them - theres is probably some hand pump jobbie available for just this type of job but I have never seen one.

I managed to cram 13 liters of oil back in and its only half way up the dip stick so probably room for another 1/2l before its topped off so probably managed to get an extra 3l out over a standard oil change - all good.

can the pipes/cooler be filled when cold - i.e. when the thermostat is closed or does it have to be topped up once the thermostat opens at temperature?

Posted

I filled my cooler but not the pipes with fresh oil - topped it off once the thermostat opened for the first time.

I think I managed to get 13l into mine and I dont have an engine oil cooler so expect to need a little more for yours.
